Sorry. I used "ps -ef | more" and looked at all the processes, to make sure that after I shut down the db and TNS listener, there were no other Oracle8i processes running (eg, a random sqlplus client).
[ Before I installed Oracle8i, I did a "ps -ef", and then did it [ again after I got everything installed and running, so I would [ get a list of all the Oracle8i processes.
Since my last post, I ctrl-c'd out of runInstaller(after letting it sit for 12 hours), and this time told it to *not* upgrade my existing db, and also to not install the sample db.
It hung in exactly the same place as in my original post, ie:
