Our consulting firm has keeping current on our certifcations as one of the "criteria" for our bonus.
I feel the real benefit is that the certifcation can be a tie-breaker on getting into a new client. If you get the experience, and some decent projects, the $$$$ will take care of itself.
I'm not sure how to value the certifcation outside the consulting world.
