Hi,

Isn't anyone going to answer this guy's question???

First, the obvious: The size/specs of the Alpha box depend entirely on the needs of the application. If you're processing a million db transactions a day, a low-end box might be ill-advised.

I can tell you what works here: I've got an Alpha 1000 with 1GB of memory (expanded from its initial 256MB). I dedicate 144 MB to 3 Oracle instances (you can do this on OpenVMS). The remainder goes to OpenVMS and the applications. We pummel this box with 5000 updates every 30 minutes or so. It takes about 2 minutes to chew through them (this metric is completely application dependant, of course).

Since you're coming from NT, I would assume that the database isn't processing too many updates today. If that's the case, and entry-level Alpha 1200 (the 1000 is obsolete now) with 256 MB of memory is probably fine.

Keep in mind that OpenVMS offers some reliability/scalability features that NT doesn't. If you're interested in this area, some topics to read up on are:

Hope this helps,

ws
