According to the "Installation Issues" list available from http://technet.oracle.com/software/products/oracle8i/info/8ipatchfaq.htm you should "Use JRE 1.1.6 v5 from http://www.blackdown.org. The JRE 1.1.7 v3 (green threads) also should work, though not tested..."
