So many issues may be considered.
1. SGA size properly? What's yout get-hit ratio? 2. Do u use 'commit=y' when u do import? And did you issue 'direct=y' when do the 'export'?
3. How many is the shared memory size when u compiled Kernel? 4. The most important one is: Oracle 8i is worse and less stable than Oracle 8.0.5 EE. This is is kind of common sense. Unless you have to use new feature of 8i(such as IFS), stick with 8.0.5 EE.
