Hi,
Build a Permanent Staging Area.
One of the best things that you can do for yourself while installing
Oracle
from tape is to build a Permanent Staging Area.
The advantage of building a Permanent Staging Area is that if you need to re-install a product for any reason, you can simply install it from the Permanent Staging Area and save yourself a significant amount of time.
The only disadvantage to building a Permanent Staging Area is that it
requires
disk space. However, the required disk space is always less than that of
installing the product, since each product in the Staging Area is placed
there
in compressed format.
The only advantage of installing directly from tape is that no extra disk space is required in creating a stage.
The obvious disadvantage is that if you choose to install directly from
tape,
then any subsequent product installations or re-installations will also
have
to be directly from tape. There are better ways to spend one's time than
waiting for the Installer to work its way through the tape just to find
the
product that one needs to install.
If you are low on disk space but like the idea of building a staging area,
you
may create a temporary staging area. The difference between a temporary
and
permanent staging area is that once a product is installed from a
temporary
staging area, it is removed from the temporary staging area and can't be
re-installed from there. If you need to re-install that product, then you
will either have to re-build the temporary staging area with the product,
or
install it directly from tape.Neither process is very time-efficient, so
it's
not necessarily a good deal.
If you have the disk space, build a Permanent Staging Area. You'll save yourself a lot of time and trouble.
To build a Permanent Staging Area from tape, select the 'Build Staging
Area
Only From Tape' option from the 'Install Actions' screen. The Installer
will
ask you for the rewinding and non-rewinding Tape device names. Once the
installer has read in the tape header information, it will create a
'stage'
directory under your $ORACLE_HOME directory.
