Learn to trust your DBA. He/she knows your application, your performance requirements, and your workload far better than anyone on the net.

You are liable to get answers ranging from 128MB to 4GB -- all are correct under some unique set of circumstances. For example if all you want to do is load 8i and not do any useful work you may be able to get by with 128MB.

Instead of asking us how much is enough you should ask your DBA to explain how he/she arrived at the 2GB memory requirement. You should expect to get figures for OS, for Oracle software, for the SGA and its components, etc.
