Changing init(instance).ora ?

Oracle 7.3.3/Solaris 2.5.1

Is it OK to be changing the init(instance).ora file once an Oracle system is up and running. I have a large table of 43,000,000 rows and am having trouble running out of shared memory and stuff. I have changed the /etc/system to higher shared memory values but my init(instance).ora is set to SMALL. I notice values can be changed to medium and large. Can I shutdown the database, change these value and bring it back up with no problems?

Any help appreciated.
