I had the same problem yesterday, but I was trying to connect as root. You should have a separate account created which is in the same group as the oracle installation account, and trying starting up the server from that account. I did it that way and connected fine.

Now, I'm not an expert, I'm just struggling to get this running myself, and can't say that I have everything running yet.... :(
