8.0.4 clients and 8i server.... Possible?

I have recently installed and migrated an 8.0.4 server onto a linux box running 8i.

All is well on the server but I can't seem to make connections to it from the clients who are running 8.0.4 on 95/NT. Am I wasting my time trying to make this function or should the 8.0.4 client code (net 8, TNS [sometimes via ODBC]) talk happily to the 8i server?

The only thing I can get to work is tnsping....
