The first question to ask is how much data do you need to back up? That will
probably determine how you do the backup.
If it's only a few hundred MB, can you close the database and do a 'cold'
(operating system) backup? This is the safest and most reliable.
If not, then you basically have to do a 'warm' (online) backup. If the only
access is read only, this shouldn't be a problem and you could even do it in
parallel if you wanted to put some time and effort in (or you could buy one of
the many tools available).
If it's mirrored, some people break the mirror and do a cold backup on the
'off-line' mirror, and then re-silver (resync the mirror).
I would recommend having a search through Oracle's web site for the Tip & Code
archives - plenty of contributors have written scripts which will churn through
and do some sort of backup, just make sure you check they work on your OS and
Oracle release.
