Raid 0 + 1: stripe then mirror.

    Take 10 discs
Make 5 into a strip set
Make the other 5 into a stripe set
Make the two stripe sets mirror each other     Burn out one disc.

When the hot spare cuts in all 5 discs in the
burnt set have to be resilvered - ouch.

Prior to version 3 of Veritas (I think) which includes     Sun's LVM system this was the only mirror/strip     combination on offer.

Raid 1 + 0: mirror then stripe

    Take 10 discs
    Create 5 pairs of mirrors
Create one stripe set from 5 mirrors     Burn out one disc

When the hot spare cuts in, only the one
disc in the damaged mirror pair needs to
        resilver.
