V$LOGHIST content cutoff criteria

We have two databases one on 7.2.3 and one on 8.0.4

The V$LOGHIST view reports back to 19 July 1999 on the version 7 database but back to April 1998 on the version 8. What might affect this difference and can it be affected.

I mainly ask as all this extra data in the version 8 is far too old to be of real interest.
