Actually I just finished the same job on Solaris. The problem seems caused by wrong controlfile. Since this command should be issued in oracle8 env, just make sure all your unix ENV variables($ORACLE_HOME etc.) are pointing to the oracle8 env you just installed , and the old o7 initSID.ora (maybe configSID.ora and orapwSID) also need to be copied /moved to the O8 $ORACLE_HOME/dbs
