listener for remote database

Is it possible to have a listener on one box service a database on
another box?  I've experimented with Network Manager and think that a
"Service Alias" is a possible solution, but the listener won't start
with the listener file that is generated.  A pointer to a good source
for the listener.ora syntax would be appreciated.
