8i is not available for linux yet. Oracle8 works well on linux platform. Most of the hassle in installation that people encounter is due to the choice of different linux flavors. You'd better use redhat 5.x, because it is widely believed that is what oracle.com used for porting. There are quite a few bugs, and also patches and work-arounds - you can check them out at technet.oracle.com. Once installed, and properly configured, I see no reason why the oracle/linux combination can't be a good production system.

The internet newsgroups and the discussion forum at technet.oracle.com are always better than any commercial support. Again, that's the linux spirit :).
