Recovering from Damaged Export File

I am unable to import crucial data from an export file generated in Oracle 6 (okay, so I'm a dinosaur). I'm getting the message "IMP-00009: abnormal end of export file." Assuming that the export file contains some usable data, but that some damage to the file prevents me from importing it, can I modify the file or use some low-level programming techniques to extract the data? Through grep I can see that references to my table exist all over the dump file, so SOMETHING is there. I'd appreciate any help you can give me. Thank you.
