  1. Under Solaris, check your oratab file in /var/opt/oracle/oratab - ensure that the 3rd field for your database is 'Y'.
  2. Ensure that the scripts in rc0.d etc are running as ORACLE not as root.
  3. Ensure that they are executable by Oracle
