Well, you don't *have* to be certified, but it ain't gonna do your career any harm, is it.

I did both the Oracle7 and Oracle8 DBA OCP in 5 weeks, taking one exam a week, without any formal Oracle training. But then I've got a lot of Oracle hands-on - about 10 years+. My advice is to look at OCP as 'icing on the cake', not as a substitute to real world experience.

Take your time and learn well. It's easy to screw up otherwise.
