The instance is a group of programs (to be more precise: tasks or threads) reading and writing from the database files server-side; the database is (as i know it) the database files itself (and the data contained).

Up to here, i hope the answer helps you.

But now the confusing part:
It is possible to have more than one instance running on one database (at the same time - don't ask me how this works); and on the other hand, one database may be spread over several computers.
