Character set changes on export

All our databases are configured to use an 8 bit West European character set. However, when I export a database, the message 'Exporting using US 7 bit character set' appears. I haven't checked yet, but I think I will lose all special characters when exporting. Is this correct? If so, how do I export using the 8-bit character set?

We are running Oracle 7.3.3 on Solaris. I export databases using the exp utility from the Unix prompt or a script.
