My understanding from my Oracle DBA training is that the DATABASE is the physical collection of datafiles, etc, while the INSTANCE is the concept of the processes and memory structures of the executing DBMS. In fact, with Oracle Parallel Server implemented, you can have multiple instances accessing (reading and modifying) the same database.
