SQL*Plus REMOTE parameter

I need to understand how to use the REMOTE parameter in the Windows NT registry with SQL*Plus. Can anyone enlighten me on this? The manual gives only a sketchy description.

The example in the manual uses named pipes, and sets REMOTE = "p:piper:dbs1". Then the manual seems to imply that when you log into sql*Plus, and specify "p:" as the connect string, that SQL*Plus will pick up the remaining information from the REMOTE registry key. Trouble is, I can't follow their example because we don't use named pipes on our network. We use TCP/IP instead. Can anyone show me how to construct as simialiar string for a TCP/IP connection??
