Help on Hot Backup (RBS)

Strange Problem ... On Oracle 7.2.3, the statement "alter tablespace rbs begin backup"
(where rbs is the rollback tablespace)
hangs for a long time.
I presume this is to make sure that all the rollbacks are flushed out before the hot backup begins. It sometimes takes 2-3 hours and sometimes only a couple of minutes.

Any suggestions as to how to avoid this time delay.
