LCC-00161 and ORA-1031 while starting a server

Oracle Server 7.3.4
NT 4.0 SP3

I'm working on testing our backup/recovery strategy, so I've been doing things like deleting datafiles, then starting the server back up. On occaision, rather than giving me a datafile error, Oracle trashes itself and gives the errors listed in the subject line. The LCC-00161 is usually associated with syntax errors in the initsid.ora files, but since they have not been touched since the instance was running 5 minutes before, there is no way that is the case.

Looking on Oracle's online help/knowledge base (this forum is infinately more responsive and often more useful) says that the NT service has corrupted itself, and to use oradim73 -DELETE -SID sid, then recreate it. This seems pretty ridiculous to just recover a datafile. The workaround does work, but has anyone else encountered this, and found a way to fix it without deleting the instance or reinstalling Oracle bits from the CD?

Thanks for the help, Jon.
