If you have not already done so, looking at patching to 8.0.4.1. I just installed 8.0.4.0 on a 4.0d machine with 4Gb of RAM and was getting a lot of memory related errors until I patched - not least the ability to get a decent sized SGA due to a mtprotect() error/bug in OSF.

The patch set, approx 25Mb, is available from Oracle's support web pages.
