Sqlplus on AIX

I've installed Oracle 8 on AIX 4.2 and am trying to connect to a remote Oracle 8 database. The problem is that when I try and run sqlplus as a NIS user it coredumps. Sqlplus works fine if the user is local to the AIX box.

Any thoughts much appreciated
