Dear Logo,
It is unfair to compare BMC Patrol with OEM. First of all, you should be sure what functionality you want to compare.
BMC Patrol has 3 product ranges. Application Management, Data Management and Backup/Recovery Management. OEM most appropriately can match the Data Management part only. Please note also that the real strong features of OEM are not free any longer.
Patrol Application management is used to proactively manage your Application stack. i.e. OS, Database, Middleware and Application. You can define actions to be taken incase there is a threat to user productivity. Support is available for various OS' (Unix, NT, OpenVMS, OS/2, NetWare, etc.), databases (Oracle, Informix, SQL Server, Sybase etc.) and applications (Exchange, Lotus Notes, SAP R/3, Oracle Applications, BAAN, PeopleSoft HRMS etc.)
The Backup and Recovery solution provides DATABASE AWARE fast and efficient backups for Oracle, Sybase and Oracle.
Patrol Data Management has some functionality not available in OEM:
1) OEM uses SQL*Net for communication which can cause a bottleneck.
2) OEM actions are directly translated on the server. Patrol lets you define
your actions on a PC in an OFFLINE mode. These can be sent at any time later
to the server for execution.
3) Patrol DB-Alter provides the user with IMPACT ANALYSIS. Thus you can
analyse in advance whether the changes that you are making are okay.
4) Patrol DB-Log Master for Oracle let's you look into the Online and Archive
Re-do log file of Oracle. SQL Statements executed can be read. This is also an
alternative to auditing !!!
5) Patrol DB-Stats and DB-reorg can be used in conjunction to optimise the
storage management of Oracle.
6) Most importantly, OEM is for Oracle only. Patrol DB products let you any
database across your enterprise from a single window !!!
