You have to alter database create datafile ....to just create a datafile with header info etc. Then apply the logs to the database to update the changes to that data file, since the creation. You will encounter this situation while maintaining a standby and a primary database. You add a new file to the primary, you need to create the datafile on the standby and then apply all archive files.
