The add-on product to BDE for native db connectivity is (or was) called Borland SQL-Link. To use this native connetion capability, the development software (e.g. Delphi) needs to be licenced (or enabled) for using it.

For example, let's say you get two Delphi shareware programs. Product 1 supports standard BDE (developed with Delphi Pro), product 2 supports BDE with native connections (developed with Delphi Client/Server).

When installing product 2 you also get all the SQL-Link/BDE native drivers for Oracle. So you can happily configure BDE for native Oracle connections. However you can not use product 1 to use that native BDE connection, even though it supports BDE. That product was developed with a Delphi version that does not have a native BDE usage licence. Product 2 however can use all the types of BDE connection, native, ODBC etc.

The reasoning behind this is I think, to prevent someone from developing software using a el cheapo version of Delphi, that can be deployed using the "advanced features" of a more expensive Delphi version, simply because the required drivers and libraries are available at runtime.

Hope this all make sense. :-)
