Basically, if your application is mission-critical (large volume of data, OLTP, data warehousing and the like ) the only solution can be Oracle plus Unix box.
Sql-Server is a low-end DBMS and Microsoft coming from a PC-Software background doesn't understand too much about enterprise computing.
However if you need to run a smaller sized application for not so many users and you don't have to worry about maintenance windows, you'll be fine with Sql-Server.

At least this is one basic consideration I'd recommend.
