Hmm...I can't speak for the poster who made the original statement, but I happen to have Java Workshop installed on my Linux box. I don't use it, though, because I find writing my code in Emacs to be much faster. It may just be a matter of personal preference, but I find the GUI builder thing in JWS to be extremely cumbersome. And if you're not using that, there's really not a huge advantage to JWS over, say, Emacs, make, and the JDK.

OTOH, I run Sparc Solaris, SparcLinux, Solaris x86, and Linux (x86) on the various machines I have at home and work, and for me (SA/Perl programmer/Java programmer), I've not found a great deal of difference in usability from platform to platform. Solaris is marginally more turn-key than Linux, Linux has somewhat better driver support. Pretty much an even trade-off, IMHO.
