First of all, Oracle7 requires you to have at least two redo log groups with one log member each. I recommend you have as many groups as you need so that the Archiver can keep up with the Logwriter during heavy loads and that you have two or more log members per group. Oracle doesn't know whether or not you're hardware mirroring. If you use Oracle's log group/member mirroring, you eliminate a single point of failure should the current redo group or a needs-to-be-archived redo group becomes corrupted.
