Perhaps a stupid question: Perhaps not. I've sometimes asked similar questions, though not that one, just to help determine whether someone was really knowledgeable about an application they claimed to have worked on or had just sat in on a few meetings.

These days asking for references is meaningless: Everyone can find a surrogate or two to say anything they want. Sometimes you have to dig to identify posers.
