Versions and machine would be helpful. :(
There is a known problem with installing 8i on any machine with a P4 processor. A search of google for p4 Oracle 8i gives the workaround as the first hit.
If your software is XP Home edition then I don't believe that Oracle will install on it at all. 8i does however install on XP pro
