SID or SERVICE_NAME

Call it a silly question if you will but I would like to know anyway. I have a Linux server running Oracle 8.1.6. and it runs fine. Through some client I connect to the SID (oralin) and with another I connect to the SERVICE_NAME (voyager, the computer name).

What is better practise to connect to SID or SERVICE_NAME, or is there no difference nor preference at all?

Thanks a bunch,
Pieter
