Thanks for the reply. I know sessions are still connected and to actually do a backup I have correctly shutdown the database (shutdown abort, startup restrict and then shutdown normal) then the database is backed up and gzipped properly.

This backup script was fine for 18 months and this problem has benn very intermitent over the last month and am trying to get to the bottom of it.
