You're shure that you haven't two different clients in your path variable? 
sqlplus foo/bar_at_baz


may call an other version of sqlplus with the apropriate tnsnames.ora,



where as the one you open by hand may not have the requested entry in its
associated tnsnames.ora.



Check for duplicate occurence of the file tnsnames.ora vthrough your explorer.
