Look in $ORACLE_HOME/admin/bdump or something like it depending on how you installed the product. This directory should contain the relevant logs.

But your comment about how you are starting your database indicates a potential source of the problem ... you never read the installation instructions on the CD. I suggest you do so now.

No doubt, had you done so, you would have put ORACLE_HOME, ORACLE_SID, and some other environment variables into the oracle user's .profile.

When you read the relevant information you will no doubt find other things you should have done involving shared memory, etc. that may well solve your problem. Note, in particular, references to two files provided named DBSTART and DBSTOP.
