I had similar problems on mandrake 8 which has the glibc 2.2 then I downgraded to glibc2.1.3 and it worked and installed just like the book describes but now half the other apps don't work :( I now have a problem with configuring the MTS to have a shared connection.
these guys at oracle sure make life easy ;)
