You could do one of the two:

• find the alert_<sid>.log. If you didn't change the background_dump_dest parameter it will be in the $ORACLE_HOME tree find $ORACLE_HOME -name alert_$ORACLE_SID.log -ls and pg it. It should contain pertinent error messages.
• the other method is (provided your $ORACLE_SID has been set) sqlplus /nolog connect / as sysdba startup nomount This should work *always* (it doesn't open the database) if that doesn't work either there's something wrong with your install or the init$ORACLE_SID.ora In the future please don't refer to 'something about' Try posting the *exact error message* and don't let the group guess. ORA-3113 is a catch-all message meaning the other side of the communication channel has died unexpectedly.
