I started off as a lecturer in a college (teaching maths). I got interested in the Administration IT functions, their new-fangled Digital VAX computer, and the Oracle database. The then System Manager was quite ok about my being interested, and gradually I began to have more and more of a formal role. Eventually I had half a timetable dedicated to the VAX and Oracle.

Eventually the post of DBA came up, and I went for it and got it.

I've been on one DAB course (for a very early version of Oracle) and I did a bit of SQL and Forms

Now I look after a unix server (Oracle 7.3.4, soon to go to 8.1.6) and a battery of NT servers, running Oracle 8.0.6.

With a bit of luck, I'll be going on my second ever DBA course in a couple of weeks.

So: paper qualifications don't mean everything. Opportunity helps. Enthusiasm counts for quite a lot.

Good luck!
