error when installing 8i client onto NT4

when installing the 8i client component, the autorun feature does not start automatically. After double clicking onsetup.exe, I get the following message:
"setup.exe is not a valid NTapplication". I was able to initiateautorun by double clicking on autorun.exe. This seems to work until I get to the Oracle Client Installation Types screen. Here I choose Typical and then I get an error message: "There was an error during loading" and I have 2 options- to stop installation or to skip thge product. Both aoptions cause theinstallation to stop.

Choosing custom install causes the same error - "There was an error during loading"
