We have several old systems running 6.0.3.30 on Interactive Unix. Several of the systems are impossible to replace with new systems because they communicate to other DOS PC's, and Oracle doesn't have a method to communicate with a DOS PC from 8.0 or 8.1. Without a DOS interface to SQL*Net, we can't change out the 6.0.3.30 systems from the field.

Now, as to reliability, that's another matter. The 6.0 systems require a lot of hand-holding. If the system is very active, we found that running for more than 24 hours was nearly impossible. We also found that since Oracle doesn't clean up after itself very well, approximately every other month we need to export the tables, drop the database, recreate the database and re-import the tables. Otherwise, tables would grow big enough that they would fill our database up. (Many of these systems are running on ultra-powerful 486 DX/33's.)

Now please note, another set of systems that collect a much smaller amount of data have been known to run for months before requiring reboot, so Oracle 6 can be reliable. Just don't try and push a lot of data through it.
