Oralce V7 and VB question

Hello,

At my work we have an Ingres database for recording test and vendor supplied data for a particular product. I'm sort of the product overseer/manager/troubleshooter etc. Everything else about this and other products are kept in a larger (supported) database. We are looking to migrate. The supported DB is Oracle 7 on an HP (Unix) server.

The older application has a front end for our technicians to input their test data. We know we have to build another client front-end but one of the engineers claims he's over half-way building a Visual Basic
(I assume v6.0) client. One of the Oracle DB admins told me that VB
can only access Oracle via an NT machine (damn drive letters).

So the question after all that is: Can VB access an Oracle 7 DB on an HP unix server without any other software being added or interposed?
(I'm pretty sure SAMBA would be shot down at this point if it is an
option)

Please respond via email to kasommer_at_kiva.net or sommer_kim_at_crane.navy.mil

Best regards,
Kim
