sqlplus core dump 8.0.5 client to 8.1.6 server

We are currently running Oracle 8.0.5 for the client and server. They are both on HP-UX 10.20 machines.

We are attempting to upgrade the back end to a higher class machine that needs to run HP-UX 11.00. In the process we need to upgrade the back end server to Oracle 8.1.6.

We are now having a problem in that sqlplus on the 8.0.5 client machine core dumps after a valid password is supplied for a connection to the database machine on 8.1.6

The dump is attached at the end of this message.

Some more info:

• a bad userid does not cause a core dump.
• the same sqlplus executable connects just fine to everything else (8.0.5 is all else we got!)
• sqlplus run on the back end using the same type of connection works fine (ie: sqlplus bobdba_at_db816 on the 8.1.6 machine connects without the core dump).
• every 8.0.5 client machine is dumping core when connecting to 8.1.6

Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.
