Thanks very much.
Your suggestions look worthwhile, will try them later today I hope.

Some additional information that might be useful to others with same problem:

I installed the same way (typical, defaults for everything) from the same CD Pack, same CD, Personal Oracle 8i, 8.1.6, on a Windows 2000 client machine at work, and can and do log on to SQLplus just as you suggest, no problem. That machine is also, of course, on a network. I am handling the coursework that way. Still would love to get it running on my machine at home for convenience.

I've got to assume that there is something that was found in the installation under Windows 98SE (and on a machine set up for internet access via the cable modem, though how a NIC card or TCP/IP would differ from a NIC card and a TCP/IP network under Windows 2000 Server at work, I don't know) which is causing the conflict.

I'm adding to the thread in the hopes that the additional information will generate more responses. I've posted the question to Oracle's installation support, after noting that a similar problem is described that is apparently specific to connecting with Developer 6 to a database for 8i Personal, specifically under Windows 98. There are other issues, sort of an FAQ, related to installation posted there for problems that don't seem related.

In case it is helpful to anyone else with a similar problem, here is that URL:
http://www.oracle.com/support/oracleinstall/

(I thought I'd checked the site carefully, but had seen the installation support listed under the "must be paid for" Meta-something support and had assumed that buyers of the trial CD packs were pretty much just stuck without support. Glad I was wrong. Now will see what sort of response I get.)
