It sounds like you are wondering if you should re-install Oracle 8i. Are you trying to test if Oracle 8i was installed properly in the first place?

I'm not sure what you mean by the installer starting another instance of itself. It is not a problem to restart the installer at any time after initial installation, e.g you might want to install a new component that was not installed the first time around. You can also use the installer to check which compents are presently installed.

If you're thinking that the original installation was bad and you are considering re-installing, I would recommend following the Oracle documentation on 'Creating a Clean Machine'.
