Thanks guys - but *sigh* I have already tried the y2K compliant installer - same problem exists - it didn't seem to make a difference. If I choose custom install and pick the first three choices, it will put the icons on the taskbar, and create the directories, but doesn't actually write any data to disk - all the dialog boxes and the install screens just go *poof*. :(
