SQL*Net vs. NET8

I'm a network newbie so please forgive any obvious ignorance.

I'm trying to set up a test to compare the performance of SQL*Net 2.3 with NET8. I have createde a simple client-server application and will time SQL running on a machine only with SQl*Net versus the same app and machine with only NET8 in an isolated network domain.

Would this be an adequate method to see which Oracle Clients perform better ? How the Oracle Client software works with the Oracle drivers is kind of fuzzy to me.
